It’s a big year for music in Tulsa! From globally recognized conventions to new local attractions, Tulsa's music scene is growing and receiving major kudos. In today's Cadenzo Chronicle, we will get a quick overview of some of the most significant events, attractions, and meetings that will assist in the continued growth of Tulsa's music scene.
At the forefront of Tulsa becoming a world leader of music cities, we have Tulsa FMAC’s partnership with Sound Diplomacy to construct the Tulsa Music Strategy. Tulsa FMAC hired Sound Diplomacy in January of 2020 with the end goals of 1) determining Tulsa's music economic impact, 2) organizing stakeholder engagement, and 3) devising a comprehensive plan for the future. With Tulsa County repping the most music establishments of any in Oklahoma, the opportunity is massive. The Tulsa Music Strategy has a multi-step action plan that maps out the next five years of steps that will position Tulsa to become a global leader in music cities. At Cadenzo, we know we bear a responsibility to help in any way we can! Two key steps we hope to play a role in are: "Rebuild and rethink the economic foundation of Tulsa's music ecosystem to diversify the industry" and "Lead with the best practices in remuneration, incentivization, and access to finance mechanisms." We can't wait to see how we can help advance this strategy!
Tulsa is once again back at the center of attention for SXSW this year in Austin! Tulsa FMAC in collaboration with Tulsa Remote are headed down to Texas the second weekend of March to show the world all the amazing things happening in Tulsa. Not familiar with SXSW? It's a yearly convention that celebrates film, interactive media, and music all at once. Expect a world class conference, music / film festivals, tech companies, investors, oh and nearly half a million of ATX’s friends from around the world. And thanks to the hard work of Tulsa FMAC over the years, Tulsa has a STRONG presence and will have hours long lines out of its venue each day they are there. Speaking of which, we at Cadenzo are excited to be joining an amazing group representing Tulsa for this year’s SXSW!
Next on the calendar is the opening of the Bob Dylan Center! The center will be opening on May 10th, 2022, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Bob Dylan Center, "Will house and exhibit more than 100,000 exclusive cultural treasures created and owned by Bob Dylan over seven decades. These include handwritten lyric manuscripts to some of the world's most treasured songs, previously unreleased recordings, never-before-seen film performances, rare and unseen photographs, visual art and other priceless items spanning Dylan's unparalleled career as one of the world's most important cultural figures." Currently, the center has different membership levels that provide various perks and experiences, a donation page where the public can make tax-deductible donations towards the center, and an online store where all of the proceeds go towards the center. This center will help put Tulsa on the map among the top music cities in the nation, leading the way for more music attractions to come.
In regards to global recognition, coming November of 2022, Tulsa is hosting the international Music Cities Convention! This is largely due to the newly developed Tulsa Music Strategy mentioned earlier, led by Sound Diplomacy. Previously held in places like the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, South Korea, and more, the Music Cities Convention is the largest and most extensive global gathering on the topic of Music Cities. Hosted by Tulsa FMAC and Tulsa Regional Tourism, the event will allow leaders in different sectors of society to evaluate the current practices regarding music and problem-solve for the future. With these leaders having a wide range of skill sets, from city planning to economic development, Tulsa's music scene is bound to benefit from this convention and hit 2023 as the world's newest music city.
And all of this is just the tip of the iceberg. It is exciting to look into the future of what's ahead for Tulsa's music scene but let's not miss what is right in front of us. The Church Studio just opened its doors and is already receiving unparalleled recognition! Known as Leon Russel's studio, this newly-renovated church boasts an awesome museum as well as a spot that people from across the globe are checking out as a space to record. Go check it out!
Finally, with covid restrictions beginning to be in the rearview mirror (knock on wood), the public can finally go back to experiencing the joys of local live music in its rawest forms. Venues are back to hosting live music every week, the concert calendar is full, Tulsa's being globally recognized as the next big music city, and The Bob Dylan Center is coming this year. 2022 is primetime for Tulsa to have its best music year to date!
